SpyFu alternatives: competitor research tools sorted by what you need to replace

SpyFu is built around competitors' paid and organic keyword history, and its Basic plan is already one of the cheapest competitor-research plans. People still leave it for daily rank tracking, deeper backlink data, traffic estimates or a tool for their own sites. This page sorts Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Mangools, Similarweb and MrKeyword by that need, with entry-plan prices read on each vendor's own page (SpyFu 1 November 2026, Semrush 2 November 2026, Ahrefs 2 November 2026, SE Ranking 1 November 2026, Mangools 1 November 2026, Similarweb 2 November 2026). We make MrKeyword, so read our section with that in mind.

Competitor keyword and ad data laid out side by side, illustrating a choice between SEO tools
The short version
  • The baseline: SpyFu Basic is $39 a month for 1 tracking project and 5,000 keywords tracked weekly (read 1 November 2026).
  • Competitor organic keywords with daily tracking: Semrush SEO $139 a month (read 2 November 2026) or SE Ranking Core $129 (read 1 November 2026).
  • Traffic and market estimates: Similarweb Competitive Intelligence $199 a month (read 2 November 2026).
  • Backlinks: Ahrefs Lite from $129 a month (read 2 November 2026).
  • Tracking your own sites: MrKeyword (our product) is free for 25 keywords, then $10 a month, built on Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools data. It does not research competitors' domains or ads.

Disclosure: MrKeyword publishes this comparison and appears in it. Every competitor price and limit below comes from the vendor's own pricing page on the date shown in Sources (SpyFu 1 November 2026, Semrush 2 November 2026, Ahrefs 2 November 2026, SE Ranking 1 November 2026, Mangools 1 November 2026, Similarweb 2 November 2026). We re-check those pages monthly through our pricing dataset, but vendors change plans without notice, so confirm on their sites before you buy.

The best SpyFu alternative depends on which part of SpyFu you would replace, because few tools are cheaper for competitor keyword history. SpyFu Basic costs $39 a month (read 1 November 2026); every plan, seat and annual price is in our SpyFu pricing guide, and the head-to-head with the biggest suite is in SpyFu vs Semrush. If you are weighing Semrush too, our Semrush alternatives page sorts the same tools from the other side.

Which SpyFu alternative fits your need?

Start with the report you open most often in SpyFu.

  • Competitors' organic keywords, with daily rank tracking: Semrush, SE Ranking or Mangools.
  • Competitors' paid search and ad history: Semrush, though SpyFu is hard to beat here.
  • Traffic and market estimates across channels: Similarweb.
  • Backlinks: Ahrefs.
  • Rankings, clicks and audits for sites you own, on Google and Bing: MrKeyword, which we make.

Competitor organic keywords: Semrush, SE Ranking or Mangools

If you use SpyFu mostly to see which keywords competitors rank for, and you want daily rank tracking, a broader suite fits better. Every figure for a site you do not own is an estimate in all of these tools; our guide to competitor keyword research shows how to check one against free data.

Semrush

Semrush's SEO plan is $139 a month (read 2 November 2026) for 5 websites and 500 keywords tracked daily, with keyword research, backlinks and site audit in one login. What you give up: it costs more than SpyFu Basic and tracks fewer keywords (500 against SpyFu's 5,000), though daily instead of weekly.

SE Ranking

SE Ranking Core is $129 a month (read 1 November 2026) for 10 projects and 2,000 keywords tracked daily, with competitor research included. What you give up: SpyFu's long paid-search history, and Core tracks fewer keywords than SpyFu Basic.

Mangools

Mangools Basic is $61 a month (read 1 November 2026) for KWFinder, SERPWatcher and the rest of its bundle: Unlimited domains, 100 keyword lookups / 24h and 200 tracked keywords updated weekly. What you give up: competitor ad history and full competitor keyword lists; it is a keyword research tool first.

Competitor PPC and ad history: Semrush

If paid search is why you use SpyFu, think twice before leaving. SpyFu's pricing page lists 10+ years of historical data on every plan, covering how competitors' organic rankings and paid ads changed over time. Semrush sells PPC research as a separate Ads toolkit on top of its SEO plans, so matching SpyFu there costs more than $139 a month. What you give up: a low price for ad history. Our SpyFu vs Semrush comparison covers both on PPC research.

Traffic and market estimates: Similarweb

If you want to size a competitor's total traffic across channels, not just its search keywords, Similarweb is built for that. Its Competitive Intelligence package is $199 a month (read 2 November 2026) with 3 months of history, 100 data credits a month and 1 user. Its numbers come from its own panel and data partners, so they are estimates too. What you give up: no rank tracker on this package, no keyword-level ad history like SpyFu's, and a much higher price than SpyFu Basic.

If links are your main job, SpyFu is not sold on backlink data, and Ahrefs is. Ahrefs Lite is $129 a month (read 2 November 2026) for 5 unverified, unlimited verified, 750 tracked keywords updated weekly, 1,000 per user a month credits and 100,000 a month crawl credits. What you give up: SpyFu's paid-search history, and Ahrefs Lite tracks far fewer keywords than SpyFu Basic and meters research by credits.

Tracking your own rankings from Search Console and Bing: MrKeyword

If you bought SpyFu mainly to watch your own rankings, you are paying for competitor data you rarely open. MrKeyword, which we make, reads Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools data for the sites you verify and keeps a daily history. Google positions are Search Console averages, with the usual 2 to 3 day delay; Bing positions sit on a separate tab (Bing rank tracking from Webmaster Tools data). It adds keyword volumes and its own crawler for audits.

  • Free: 1 website, 25 tracked keywords, 100 audit pages a month.
  • Starter: $10 a month for 1 website and 500 tracked keywords.
  • Growth: $19 a month for 3 websites and 1,500 tracked keywords. Every limit is on the MrKeyword pricing page.

What you give up: everything about domains you do not own. See the section below.

What MrKeyword does not do

  • It does not show competitors' ads, ad copy or paid keyword history, which is SpyFu's core.
  • It does not measure competitors' rankings; competitor views are predictions, labelled Predicted.
  • It does not scrape live search results, so there is no on-demand refresh, and it has no web-wide backlink database on the scale of Ahrefs.
  • No web-scale keyword index. It cannot list every keyword a competitor ranks for. Its search volumes come from Google Keyword Planner through the official Google Ads API, for the keywords you research.
  • Competitor positions are predicted, not measured. The Competitors tab in rank tracking estimates where rival domains rank from MrKeyword's own index and labels every figure Predicted.
  • No live SERP checks. It never scrapes Google. Your positions are Google's own average positions from Search Console (and Bing Webmaster Tools), for sites you verify, with Google's usual 2 to 3 day delay.
  • A smaller link index. Backlinks and Link Authority come from MrKeyword's web graph, which is smaller than the link indexes the big suites run.
  • No local pack, map or ads tracking, and no social media or PPC toolkits.

Who should keep SpyFu?

Stay on SpyFu if you research competitors' paid and organic keywords every week and weekly rank updates are enough. For that job, SpyFu Basic at $39 a month costs less than most suites' entry plans, and none of the cheaper tools here has its ad history.

Questions and answers

SpyFu alternatives questions

What is the best alternative to SpyFu?

It depends on the job. Semrush SEO ($139/mo) or SE Ranking Core ($129/mo) for competitor keywords with daily tracking, Similarweb ($199/mo) for traffic and market estimates, Ahrefs Lite ($129/mo) for backlinks, and MrKeyword (free, then $10/mo) for your own sites. Prices as of November 2026.

Is there a cheaper alternative to SpyFu?

For competitor ad history, few tools cost less than SpyFu Basic at $39 a month. Mangools Basic is $61 for keyword research, and for sites you own, Google Search Console is free and MrKeyword is free for 25 tracked keywords.

Is MrKeyword a replacement for SpyFu?

No. MrKeyword does not show competitors' ads or measure their rankings. It fits when you mainly report on sites you verify, using Google's and Bing's own average positions, with audits and keyword research.

Who should not switch away from SpyFu?

PPC and SEO specialists who research competitors' paid and organic keyword history every week and are fine with weekly rank updates. That history is SpyFu's core, and the alternatives either charge more for it or do not offer it.
