- You write the questions your customers ask an AI assistant, for example “best accounting software for a small bakery”.
- MrKeyword asks each connected engine — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity — every question once a week, or on demand (once a day per question).
- For each answer it records: was your brand named, in what position among the brands named, which competitors were named, and which domains were cited.
- No score is invented. Every number comes from matching your brand and competitor names in the stored answer text, and the sentence that named you is shown next to it.
- Free includes 3 tracked questions; Starter 15, Growth 50, Agency 150, shared by every site in the workspace.
What AI visibility tracking is
AI visibility is how often AI assistants name or cite your business when someone asks them a question you would like to be the answer to. It is the AI-answer equivalent of a ranking: instead of “what position is my page for this keyword”, the question is “does ChatGPT mention us when a customer asks for a recommendation, and who does it mention instead?”
Search Console cannot answer that. Google reports AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the normal Performance report, mixed in with web results, and ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini apps do not offer any report to site owners at all. The only reliable way to see what an AI assistant says about you is to ask it, the same way, on a schedule, and keep the answers.
How MrKeyword measures it
-
Write the questions your customers ask
Add the prompts a buyer would type, one per line: “which CRM is best for a 5-person agency?”, “alternatives to Semrush for small sites”. Add the spellings of your brand and up to 10 competitors with their domains.
-
MrKeyword asks every engine, every week
Each question is sent to every AI engine connected to the platform: ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google), Claude (Anthropic) and Perplexity. Runs repeat every 7 days, and you can re-run a question on demand once every 24 hours.
-
The answer is stored and matched, not scored by AI
The engine only writes the answer. MrKeyword then matches your brand and competitor names as whole words, collects every link, bare domain and citation in the answer, and records the order in which brands first appear. Position 1 means the answer named you before anyone else.
-
You read the trend and the exact sentence
The AI Visibility page shows mention rate and position per engine and question over time, the competitors that appear when you do not, the domains each engine cites, and the sentence that described you.
What is recorded for every answer
| Field | What it means | How it is found |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mentioned | The answer names your brand or domain, or cites your site | Whole-word, case-insensitive match on your brand terms and domain |
| Position | Your order among all brands the answer names | Order of first appearance in the answer text |
| Site cited | A link or citation points to your domain or a subdomain | URLs, bare domains and the engine's own citation list |
| Competitors named | Which of your listed competitors appear, and where | The same matching as your own brand |
| Cited domains | Every website the answer points readers to | Up to 50 domains per answer |
| Excerpt | The sentence that first named you | Copied from the stored answer |
Which AI engines are covered, and how
Engines answer differently depending on whether they search the web for the question. That matters for how you read the results, so MrKeyword labels it.
| Engine | Searches the web for the answer | What a mention tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | Yes | Whether live web sources about you are strong enough to be picked and cited today. |
| ChatGPT (OpenAI API) | No | What the model already “knows” about your category from its training data. |
| Gemini (Google API) | No | The same, for Google's model. |
| Claude (Anthropic API) | No | The same, for Anthropic's model. |
The consumer ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude apps can switch on web search for some questions, so a person using the app may see a different answer from the API. Treat the non-search engines as a measure of brand memory, which changes slowly, and Perplexity as a measure of current web evidence, which you can move with better pages.
Track three questions freeThe Free plan includes 3 AI visibility questions, checked every week across every connected engine.
Start freeWhat to do when AI answers leave you out
An AI answer is built from what the engine finds, or remembers, about your category. The useful moves are the same ones that help normal search, aimed at the questions you track:
- Read the cited domains. If Perplexity keeps citing the same three comparison pages and review sites, those are the sources to be accurately listed on — by being a product worth including, not by paying for placement.
- Publish the page the question needs. A clear answer near the top, a comparison table, prices and limits in plain text, and sources. Answer engines quote pages that state facts plainly.
- Make sure AI search crawlers can read you. Check that
robots.txtdoes not block OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Claude-SearchBot if you want to appear in their search answers. Our AI crawler guide lists each bot. - Keep the same facts everywhere. Your pricing, features and name should match on your site, profiles and directories, so engines are not left choosing between conflicting versions.
The full method, with official sources, is in our generative engine optimization guide.
What MrKeyword does not do
- It does not see what a specific person was shown. AI answers vary between runs, accounts and locations; weekly runs show the trend, not one user's screen.
- It does not measure Google AI Overviews or AI Mode directly. Their clicks are inside Search Console's web totals, which MrKeyword's rank tracking reads.
- It does not estimate “AI traffic” or invent a visibility score. Every number is a count of stored answers.
- It cannot make an engine recommend you. It shows where you stand and which sources the engine trusts.

Questions and answers
AI visibility questions
Can I see if ChatGPT recommends my business?
Yes. Add the questions your customers ask and your brand name. MrKeyword asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity every week and shows whether each answer named you, in which position, and the sentence it used.
Is AI visibility the same as ranking in Google?
No. Google rankings come from Search Console. AI visibility measures whether an AI assistant names or cites you in a written answer. The two are related, because answer engines that search the web lean on pages that already rank and state facts clearly.
Why do the answers change from week to week?
AI engines are not deterministic and their models and sources change. That is why MrKeyword tracks the same questions on a schedule: a single answer is an anecdote, a weekly series is a trend.
Does it track Google AI Overviews?
Not directly. Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks in Search Console's web search totals, which MrKeyword's rank tracking reads, but there is no separate AI Overviews report to import.
How many questions can I track for free?
Three on the Free plan, checked weekly across every connected engine. Paid plans include 15, 50 or 150, and a one-time pack adds 25.
