SEO MCP servers compared: what they are and how to choose one

An SEO MCP server lets Claude, Cursor or another AI assistant call an SEO tool's data while it answers you. Several SEO vendors now run one, and they differ more than the name suggests: whose data they read, how they charge, and whether they can change anything. This guide compares five servers from their official pages, including our own, and sets out the questions that decide which one fits.

People exploring search data on a screen
The short version
  • An SEO MCP server exposes an SEO tool's data as tools an AI assistant can call, so answers come from that tool's numbers instead of the model's memory.
  • The biggest difference is whose data it reads: Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking and DataForSEO bring web-scale indexes of other sites; MrKeyword reads your own Search Console and Bing data, its own crawl of your site and live Keyword Planner volume.
  • Check the cost model: Ahrefs and Semrush meter MCP calls in API units, SE Ranking uses your plan's API credits, DataForSEO is pay-as-you-go, and MrKeyword charges lookups only for keyword volume calls.
  • Check read-only versus actions: MrKeyword tokens are read-only unless you allow changes, which adds 5 action tools inside MrKeyword.
  • Google publishes an official, experimental Google Analytics MCP server. We found no official Google Search Console MCP server.

What is an SEO MCP server?

An SEO MCP server is an SEO tool's data and functions offered over the Model Context Protocol, so an AI assistant such as Claude or Cursor can call them while it answers you. MCP's own documentation describes it as an open standard for connecting AI applications to external systems. The assistant reads the server's list of tools, decides which ones a question needs, calls them and writes the answer from what comes back.

Without a server, an assistant can explain what keyword difficulty means but cannot tell you your own page's clicks last week or a competitor's backlinks. With one, it can, within the limits of the data behind that server. That last part is why the choice matters: every SEO MCP server is only as useful as the dataset it fronts.

If you have not connected one before, the Claude SEO MCP setup guide walks through tokens, Claude Code, Claude Desktop and Cursor step by step. This page is about choosing which server to connect.

SEO MCP servers compared

The five servers below split into two groups: four that front web-scale third-party SEO data, and one (MrKeyword) that fronts your own site's first-party data. Every row comes from the vendor's official page, checked on 29 October 2026; plans and limits change, so check the linked source before you buy.

The first four bring something MrKeyword does not have: an index of the wider web. If you need a competitor's backlinks, their estimated traffic or a live results page, those are the servers built for it. MrKeyword's server is narrower and cheaper: it answers from data Google and Bing report about your own verified sites, plus its own crawler.

Is there an official Google SEO MCP server?

Google publishes an official Google Analytics MCP server, but we found no official Google Search Console MCP server. The Analytics server lives in Google's googleanalytics GitHub organisation, is marked experimental, runs locally (pipx run analytics-mcp), uses the Analytics Admin and Data APIs, and is read-only by default. It answers questions about Analytics properties, not search queries or positions.

The Search Console API page describes querying search analytics, listing verified sites and managing sitemaps, and does not mention MCP. Community-built Search Console servers exist, but we have not verified any, so we do not recommend one here. Our Google Search Console MCP guide covers the options for getting Search Console data into Claude.

How to choose an SEO MCP server

Choose by three questions: whose data you need, how each call is charged, and whether the assistant should be able to change anything. The table above answers them per vendor; here is how to read it.

  1. Own-site data or web-scale competitor data?

If your questions are about your own site (“which pages lost clicks?”, “what is on page two?”, “what did the crawl find?”), first-party data is the more direct source: Search Console reports what Google actually showed and how people clicked. If your questions are about other sites (“who links to my competitor?”, “what does this domain rank for?”), you need a vendor with a web-scale index. Many teams need both, and a client can connect more than one server.

  2. How is each call charged?

An assistant may call several tools for one question, so the metering model matters. Ahrefs and Semrush count API units, SE Ranking draws on plan API credits, and DataForSEO bills per request. MrKeyword's site tools have no per-call charge; research_keyword costs one lookup per call and bulk_keyword_check one lookup per 25 keywords, because each is a live Keyword Planner request. Every server also has rate limits; MrKeyword's is 120 calls a minute per token.

  3. Read-only or actions?

Some servers only read; others can start jobs or change settings. MrKeyword tokens are read-only by default and get 22 read tools. A token created with “Allow this token to make changes” also gets 5 action tools (track_keywords, set_target_page, add_annotation, start_site_audit, run_report), which change data inside MrKeyword only. Start read-only with any vendor and add write access only when you need it.

  4. Does it work with your client?

Remote servers that accept a URL and a header work with most current clients. Check the vendor's page for your client, and note that claude.ai custom connectors connect from Anthropic's cloud, so the server must be reachable on the public internet.

What MrKeyword's SEO MCP server offers

MrKeyword's server gives an assistant 27 tools and 4 ready-made prompts over one workspace's own search data: 22 read tools for every token and 5 action tools for tokens that allow changes. The full list, with arguments, is in the developer reference.

  • Search Console and Bing data. get_search_queries returns real queries from the last 28 days with filters such as almost_there (average positions 11–20); get_rankings, get_rank_summary and get_keyword_history cover tracked keywords on Google or Bing.
  • Site audits. get_site_audit and get_audit_issues read MrKeyword's own crawl: health score with its formula, issues by category and severity, affected pages and fixes.
  • Keyword volume. research_keyword and bulk_keyword_check make live Google Ads Keyword Planner requests. Difficulty and intent are MrKeyword estimates and are labelled as such.
  • Prompts. weekly_seo_review, fix_my_top_issues, find_keyword_opportunities and client_report package common workflows.

What MrKeyword does not do

MrKeyword's MCP server has no web-scale index, so it cannot answer questions about other people's sites. If you need any of the following, one of the other servers above is the better fit.

  • No backlink tools. There are no MCP tools for your links or anyone else's.
  • No competitor rankings or traffic. Rankings come only from your own verified Search Console and Bing properties, and there are no market-wide traffic numbers via MCP.
  • No live SERP positions. Positions are averages Google or Bing report for a period, never a scrape of the results page.
  • No free keyword volume. Volume comes only from live Keyword Planner lookups, which use your plan's lookup credits.
  • No changes to your site or Google account. Search Console and Bing connections are read-only, and no tool edits or publishes pages.
  • No ChatGPT support claim. MrKeyword documents setup for Claude Code, the Claude apps and Cursor, and does not list ChatGPT as supported.

Comparing whole tools, not just servers? The AI SEO tools comparison covers the wider products, and the Semrush alternative and Ahrefs alternative pages set out what web-scale data adds.

Read the tool list after you connect. Vendors add and rename tools. Your client's tool list, or a tools/list request with your token, is the authority on what a server can do today.

Questions and answers

SEO MCP servers questions

What is an SEO MCP server?

It is an SEO tool's data and functions offered over the Model Context Protocol, so an AI assistant such as Claude or Cursor can call them while it answers. The assistant picks the tools, calls them and writes its answer from what they return.

Which SEO MCP server should I use?

It depends on the data you need. For questions about sites you own, a server on your Search Console data, such as MrKeyword's, answers directly. For competitors, backlinks or live results pages, use a server with a web-scale index, such as Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking or DataForSEO.

Is there an official Google Search Console MCP server?

We found none. Google publishes an official, experimental Google Analytics MCP server, but the Search Console API documentation does not mention MCP. Community servers exist; we have not verified any.

Are SEO MCP servers free?

Not usually. Semrush says its MCP is not free, Ahrefs lists it on Lite and above with API units, SE Ranking includes it in subscriptions on API credits, and DataForSEO is pay-as-you-go. MrKeyword's works on any plan including Free, with keyword volume calls using lookup credits.

Can I connect more than one SEO MCP server?

Yes. MCP clients such as Claude Code and Cursor can hold several servers at once, so you can pair a first-party server for your own site with a web-scale one for competitor research.
