How it works

How to check your keyword rankings in three steps.

  1. Enter your website

Type the site you want to check. It is carried through sign-in, so the app opens on that website.

  2. Connect Search Console

Sign in with Google and pick the property. Access is read-only, and the first sync imports up to 16 months of history in the background. The Free plan never expires and asks for no card.

  3. Open Organic Rankings

The app opens on Rank Tracking first; choose Organic Rankings from the menu. Search for a keyword or scroll the list: each query shows its average position, the page that ranks, clicks, impressions and CTR for the last 7, 28 or 90 days. Filter by position band, or by what is new, lost, improved or declined.

Example

What does a keyword ranking check show you?

A ranking check shows each query's average Google position next to the page that ranks for it, with the clicks and impressions behind the number. The table below is an example with invented figures, not a real website's data.

Example only: made-up numbers for a fictional plumbing website, laid out the way Organic Rankings shows a 28-day period, plus one tracked keyword with no impressions.
QueryRanking pageAvg. positionClicksImpressionsCTR
emergency plumber near me/emergency-plumber/4.2389104.2%
boiler service cost/boiler-service/9.6116401.7%
how to bleed a radiator/blog/bleed-a-radiator/17.331,2800.2%
plumber open on sunday/emergency-plumber/31.80950%
burst pipe insurance claim/blog/burst-pipe/68.40220%
water heater installation (tracked)—Not available00—

How to read it: the first query sits on page one; “how to bleed a radiator” is seen often but sits on page two, which is the kind of query worth improving first. Positions run as deep as Google showed the page, so 68.4 is a real reading, not a cut-off. The last row is a keyword the site tracks but was never shown for: with no impressions there is no position, so it reads Not available rather than 100.

No scraping

Why does MrKeyword never scrape Google?

MrKeyword never scrapes Google, because the measured answer already exists and scraping it is against Google's rules. Google's spam policies count automated queries and scraping results for rank checking as machine-generated traffic.

A scraped check is also a weaker measurement. It records one results page for one location, device and moment. Search Console's position comes from the searches that really happened, so it covers every country, device and day your page was shown.

Each website's Search Console data is synced once a day. MrKeyword keeps up to 5,000 queries a day for each site, and a keyword you choose to track is fetched from Search Console on its own, so it is never cut off by that limit.

Accuracy

How accurate is a keyword position from Search Console?

It is Google's own average of what it measured, so it is reliable for trends, as long as you read it as an average rather than one result. Search Console records the topmost position your site held each time it was shown, then averages that across every impression in the period.

Three things follow. A query seen mostly on mobile in one country carries that mix into its average. The newest days are still settling, because Search Console runs about three days behind. And very rare queries are left out of the query report to protect privacy, so a long-tail phrase can count towards your site's totals without a row of its own.

Check or track

Keyword rank checker or rank tracker: which do you need?

Use the checker to see where you rank right now, and the tracker to watch chosen keywords move over time. Both read the same Search Console data on the same free account.

Check where you rank now

Organic Rankings lists every query Search Console reports for your site, with its average position and ranking page. Use it to answer “where do I rank for this?” or to find the queries sitting just off page one.

How to track keyword rankings
A few useful boundaries

What this does not do

A rank checker built on Search Console has clear edges. These are the ones worth knowing first.

It cannot check a keyword you have no impressions for.

No impression means Google measured no position. To size up a keyword you do not rank for yet, look up its demand in the free keyword research tool.

It cannot measure a competitor's positions.

Search Console only answers for sites you have verified; Rank Tracking's Competitors tab shows predicted positions, labelled Predicted. For other domains, MrKeyword offers what its own data can support: link authority and linking domains in the domain authority checker, and a labelled traffic estimate with its range in the website traffic checker. If you need competitors' rankings, our guide to the best rank tracking software explains which SERP-based trackers do that.

It is not a live, city-level check.

Positions are averages over days, by country and device, not one results page in one town.

It is not instant on day one.

The first sync runs in the background, and Search Console itself runs about three days behind.

Check my rankings free
Is this keyword rank checker free?

Yes. It runs on the Free plan, which never expires and asks for no credit card. Organic Rankings lists the queries Search Console reports for your site with their average position, and there is no per-check fee, because nothing is fetched from Google's results page. To keep a daily history for the keywords you care most about, the Free plan tracks 25 of them.

Can I check where another website ranks for a keyword?

No. Search Console only reports on websites you have verified, so MrKeyword has no measured position for a competitor's site, and it will not scrape Google to invent one. For other domains it offers link authority and an estimated traffic range from its own data, each labelled for what it is.

Why does my keyword show no position?

Because Search Console recorded no impressions for it in the period. Either your site was not shown for that query, the query is rare enough that Google leaves it out of the query report to protect searchers' privacy, or the latest days are not in yet: Search Console runs about three days behind. MrKeyword shows that as no data, never as position 0 or 100.

Why is the position different from what I see when I search?

Your own search is one result for one person, place, device and moment. Search Console records the topmost position your site held each time it was shown and averages that across every impression in the period, so it describes where you usually appear. Our guide to Search Console average position walks through the arithmetic.

How is this different from the free rank tracker?

This page is for a one-off check: connect Search Console and read where you rank for every query Search Console reports, today. The free rank tracker is for keeping watch: it stores a daily position for the 25 keywords you choose on the Free plan, shows what moved, and can alert you when one does.
