What is a good domain authority score? The Link Authority distribution, August–October 2026

There is no universal good domain authority score: a good score is one close to or above the sites that rank for your searches. For scale, the median of the 134,979,706 domains in MrKeyword's web graph (August–October 2026) has a Link Authority of 4 out of 100, the top 10% score 12 or more and the top 1% 25 or more.

Key numbers
  • Median Link Authority: 4/100, the score of the domain ranked #67,489,853 of 134,979,706.
  • Top 10%: 12+. Top 1%: 25+. Top 0.1%: 37+.
  • A score of 20 or more is reached by 2.6% of the domains in the web graph (3,506,437 domains).
  • A score of 30 or more by 0.4% (539,310 domains).
  • Data: MrKeyword's web graph (August–October 2026), imported 31 October 2026.

What is a good domain authority score?

A good domain authority score is one that matches or beats the sites ranking for the searches you want, whatever the number is. Every authority score, MrKeyword's Link Authority included, is relative: it says how a domain's links compare with every other domain's. A local plumber competes with the other plumbers in its town, not with national newspapers, so its score only has to hold up against theirs.

The numbers below give the scale. Only 2.6% of the 134,979,706 domains in the web graph score 20 or more, 0.4% score 30 or more, and the median domain scores 4. So a site in the 20s already ranks above the great majority of the web, and a score that looks low on a 0–100 scale is often normal for its market.

To see what is good for your queries, search for them, note the 3–5 sites ranking above you and compare them with your own in MrKeyword's free domain authority checker. It takes up to 5 domains at once with no sign-up; a link such as /domain-authority-checker?domains=wikipedia.org,github.com opens it with the domains filled in.

How are Link Authority scores distributed across the web?

83.1% of the 134,979,706 domains in MrKeyword's web graph (August–October 2026) score between 0 and 9; only the top 10% reach 12. The table counts every domain in the graph by its Link Authority band, with the share of all domains in the band, the share in that band or higher, and the web graph ranks the band covers.

Every domain in MrKeyword's web graph (August–October 2026). A domain's web-graph Link Authority follows from its PageRank rank alone, so each band is a fixed range of ranks. "Described as" is the wording MrKeyword's domain profiles use for the band.

The scale is steep at the top: only the domain ranked #1 scores 100, and the domain ranked #2 already scores 96. Of the 101 possible scores, 96 occur in this release.

What score puts a site in the top 10%, 1% or 0.1%?

Every domain in the top 10% of MrKeyword's web graph (August–October 2026) has a Link Authority of at least 12, and every domain in the top 1% at least 25; the top 0.1% start at 37. The first table gives the lowest score in each top slice of the web graph; the second turns it around and gives the share of domains at or above a score.

What Link Authority does a site at a given web graph rank have?

A domain ranked #1,000 in MrKeyword's web graph (August–October 2026) has a Link Authority of 63, one ranked #100,000 has 39, and one ranked #1,000,000 has 26. Web graph rank is the domain's PageRank position among all 134,979,706 domains; each tenfold step down the ranks costs the same number of points, which is what a logarithmic scale means.

MrKeyword stores the 50,000,000 best-ranked domains with their linking-domain counts; every domain below that rank scores 5 or less. The domain authority checker shows a score for the 50,000,000 stored domains; a domain below that rank shows no score there until MrKeyword sees links to it.

How many websites link to a site at each score?

The typical domain with a Link Authority of 5–9 has 2 linking domains, and the typical one at 90–100 has 10,000,000–19,999,999. Linking domains count each website that links to a domain once, however many links it has. The table gives the median for each band, counted over the 50,000,000 best-ranked domains MrKeyword stores with their linking-domain counts.

Rank weighs where links come from, not only how many there are, so two sites with the same number of linking domains can score differently: a link from a well-linked domain counts for more. To see who links to a site, use the free backlink checker. Domains below the stored ranks (scores under 5) are not counted here.

How do Link Authority scores differ by domain ending?

Among the 50,000,000 best-ranked domains in MrKeyword's web graph (August–October 2026), .edu domains have the largest share scoring 20 or more (41.6%) of the 14 endings compared, and .it the smallest (4.6%). Across all stored domains that share is 7%. The table counts every registered domain under each ending in that range, infrastructure included.

Domains among the 50,000,000 best-ranked domains of MrKeyword's web graph (August–October 2026); endings with fewer than 100 such domains are left out. The long tail of each ending below that range is not counted, so the medians describe established sites, not every registered domain.

How is MrKeyword Link Authority calculated?

For any domain in the web graph, Link Authority = 100 × (1 − ln(rank) ÷ ln(134,979,706)), rounded, where rank is the domain's PageRank position among the 134,979,706 domains of the release. The strongest domain scores 100 and the last one 0. Because the score depends on rank alone, the share of domains in each band is set by the formula and the size of the graph; what changes between releases is which domains hold which ranks.

PageRank counts a link from a well-linked domain for more than a link from an obscure one, so rank reflects both how many sites link to a domain and how strong they are. Where MrKeyword's own crawler has seen links to a domain from at least 10 different domains, the checker and the profiles use MrKeyword's own PageRank over that link graph instead, on its own log curve; the distribution on this page covers the web-graph score, which the formula gives every domain in the graph, though the checker can show it only for the 50,000,000 stored domains. The Link Authority method note gives both formulas.

Is Link Authority the same as Moz DA or Ahrefs DR?

No. Link Authority is MrKeyword's own score from MrKeyword data; Moz Domain Authority and Ahrefs Domain Rating come from their own link indexes and formulas, so a Link Authority of 25 is not a DA or DR of 25. The percentiles on this page describe Link Authority only. What the two vendors say about their own scores, checked on their pages on 2 November 2026:

  • Moz DA ranges from 1 to 100 and is calculated with a machine learning model, mainly from link data. Moz says there is no universally good DA score because it is a relative metric, that it is easier to grow a score from 20 to 30 than from 70 to 80, and that new websites start at 1 (Moz: Domain Authority).
  • Ahrefs DR is on a 100-point scale: Ahrefs splits each linking domain's rating among the domains it links to, then scales the result into 0–100. Ahrefs calls DR a relative metric by definition and says a DR is good when it is higher than or comparable to similar sites (Ahrefs: What is Domain Rating).

All three agree on the practical rule: compare a site with its competitors inside one tool, never across tools. What domain authority is, and how Moz DA and Ahrefs DR differ explains the scores in more depth, and how to increase domain authority covers what actually raises them.
