Perplexity SEO: how to get cited in Perplexity answers

Perplexity searches the web for every answer and links its sources with numbered citations. To be one of those sources, PerplexityBot has to be able to reach your pages, and your page has to answer the question better than the others it finds. Here is how Perplexity finds pages, the robots.txt to use, what tends to get cited, and how to check whether you are.

A conversation with an AI assistant whose answer cites websites as numbered sources
The short version
  • Perplexity searches the internet in real time for each question and links the pages it used with numbered citations, so a well-made page can be cited without waiting for a model update.
  • PerplexityBot is the crawler that surfaces and links websites in Perplexity's search results. Perplexity recommends allowing it.
  • Perplexity-User fetches a page when a person asks, and Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt. Perplexity says neither bot is used to train foundation models.
  • robots.txt is only half of access: if your CDN or firewall challenges PerplexityBot, it cannot read the page. Perplexity publishes its IP ranges so you can allow it.
  • Check it yourself: ask your buyers' questions in Perplexity, read the sources it lists, and look for perplexity.ai referrals in your analytics.

What is Perplexity SEO?

Perplexity SEO is the work of making your pages reachable by Perplexity's crawler and useful enough that Perplexity cites them in its answers. Perplexity's help center describes three steps for every answer: understand the question, search the internet in real time, then summarise the most relevant findings with numbered citations linking to the original sources.

That makes Perplexity different from a chatbot answering from memory. Each answer is built from pages Perplexity found for that question, and each citation is a link to a page. "Ranking" in Perplexity means being one of those numbered sources, or being named in the answer text.

This guide covers Perplexity only. For ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot side by side, read how to rank in ChatGPT and other AI answers. For every AI crawler in one robots.txt, see how to allow or block AI crawlers.

How does Perplexity find and read web pages?

Perplexity uses two agents: PerplexityBot, which surfaces and links websites in its search results, and Perplexity-User, which fetches a page when a person's question needs it. Both are described in Perplexity's crawler documentation.

Perplexity's two agents

User-agent tokenWhat it doesrobots.txtUsed for training?
PerplexityBotSurfaces and links websites in Perplexity's search resultsFollows it; Perplexity recommends allowing this botNo, Perplexity says it is not used to train foundation models
Perplexity-UserLoads a page when a user asks a question that needs itGenerally ignores it, because the fetch is user-requestedNo, Perplexity says it is not used to train foundation models

The practical result: PerplexityBot is the bot that decides whether you can be surfaced in Perplexity's search results, so it is the one to allow. Because Perplexity says neither agent collects content for training foundation models, there is no training trade-off to weigh, unlike GPTBot or ClaudeBot.

What robots.txt lines let Perplexity cite your site?

Add a named group that allows PerplexityBot, and make sure no wider rule or CDN setting blocks it. If your robots.txt has no rule that mentions PerplexityBot and your * group allows the pages, it is already allowed; the named group just makes your intent explicit.

robots.txt: allow Perplexity to surface your pages

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: *
Allow: /
A named group replaces your * rules for that bot, so copy any private-path Disallow lines (for example /account/) into the PerplexityBot group too.

Two checks people miss:

  • Your CDN or firewall. robots.txt is only half of access. If a bot-protection service challenges PerplexityBot, it cannot read the page no matter what robots.txt says. Perplexity publishes the IP ranges its bots use in its crawler documentation, so you can allow them at the firewall instead of opening the door to anything that claims to be PerplexityBot.
  • Plugin or host rules you did not write. Some SEO plugins and hosts add AI-bot blocks. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and search for PerplexityBot, or paste a page into the free AI crawler checker to see which AI bots may read it.

If you want to stay out of Perplexity instead, disallowing PerplexityBot stops you being surfaced in its search results. It does not stop Perplexity-User, which Perplexity says generally ignores robots.txt; only a firewall rule does that.

What kind of pages does Perplexity cite?

Perplexity does not publish ranking factors, but because it summarises the most relevant findings from a live search, the pages it cites tend to be the ones that answer the question plainly and back it with facts. What follows are observations and the general advice Microsoft and Google give for AI answers, not a Perplexity formula.

  • A direct answer near the top. A first sentence that answers the question as asked is easy to quote. If the answer is buried under an introduction, another page may say it first.
  • Facts in plain text and tables. Prices, specs, steps and comparisons in HTML text and tables can be read and cited. A price that only appears in an image or a PDF often cannot. Microsoft's advice for Copilot citations also suggests clear headings, tables and FAQ sections.
  • Dated facts and named sources. Say when a fact was checked and link where it came from. Microsoft suggests supporting claims with examples, data and cited sources, and keeping content current.
  • Something other pages do not have. Google's generative AI optimization guide puts first-hand experience and expert views ahead of generic tips, and warns against making a page for every variation of a question.
  • Fresh pages. Because Perplexity searches each time, an updated page can be picked up without waiting for a model to be retrained. Keep sitemaps current so changes are found.

One more place to look: the sources Perplexity already cites for your question. Those are the pages you are competing with, and they are often review sites, comparison lists and directories. Making sure your product is listed there accurately can matter as much as your own page.

How can you check whether Perplexity cites your site?

Ask Perplexity the questions your buyers ask, read the sources it lists for each answer, and watch for visits referred from perplexity.ai in your analytics. Perplexity does not give site owners a citation report, so you build your own view.

  1. Write 10 to 20 real buyer questions

Use the words customers use in calls and emails. Mix "best X for Y", "X vs Y" and "how do I" questions. Our guide to checking if ChatGPT mentions your brand has the full manual method and a spreadsheet layout that works for Perplexity too.

  2. Ask each one and read the sources

For each answer, note whether your brand is named, whether one of your pages is among the numbered citations, and which other domains are cited. Answers can vary between runs, so keep the text.

  3. Look for Perplexity referrals in analytics

When someone clicks a citation, the visit usually arrives with perplexity.ai as the referrer. Filter your referral report for it to see which pages get those clicks. Some visits may arrive without a referrer, so treat this as a floor, not a total.

  4. Repeat on a schedule

One answer is an anecdote. The same questions asked every week show whether a rewrite or a fixed firewall rule made a difference.

What does MrKeyword do for Perplexity visibility?

MrKeyword's AI visibility feature asks Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude your chosen questions every week and records whether each answer named you, in what position, which competitors it named and which sites it cited. In MrKeyword's checks Perplexity is the engine that searches the web, so its results show how your current pages compete, not just what a model remembers.

Prices and all limits are on the pricing page. The Site Audit, on every plan, flags robots.txt rules that block PerplexityBot and other AI crawlers.

What does MrKeyword not do?

MrKeyword measures and audits; it cannot make Perplexity cite you, and it does not see exactly what an individual user was shown. Specifically:

  • It uses Perplexity's API, not the consumer app. A person asking the same question in the app, signed in or in another location, may see a different answer.
  • It does not change your robots.txt or firewall. It tells you what is blocked; you or your developer make the change.
  • It does not import your analytics. Perplexity referral visits are in your own analytics tool.
  • No guaranteed placement. Nobody outside Perplexity controls its answers, and any tool that promises a Perplexity ranking is promising something it cannot deliver.

Questions and answers

Perplexity SEO questions

How do I get my website to appear in Perplexity?

Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and in your CDN or firewall, then publish pages that answer your buyers' questions plainly, with facts in text and tables and the sources you used. Perplexity searches the web in real time for each answer, so a clear, current page can be cited without waiting for a model update.

Which crawler does Perplexity use?

PerplexityBot, which Perplexity says is designed to surface and link websites in its search results. It also uses Perplexity-User to fetch a page when a person's question needs it; Perplexity says that fetcher generally ignores robots.txt because the request comes from a user.

Does Perplexity use my content to train AI models?

Perplexity says neither PerplexityBot nor Perplexity-User is used to collect content for training AI foundation models. So unlike GPTBot or ClaudeBot, there is no training trade-off when you allow PerplexityBot.

How do I know if Perplexity cites my site?

Ask Perplexity the questions your buyers ask and read the numbered sources under each answer, and look for perplexity.ai in the referral report of your analytics. MrKeyword's AI visibility feature can ask a fixed set of questions every week: 3 on the Free plan, 15 on Starter, 50 on Growth and 150 on Agency.
