The best SEO rank tracking software in 2026: how each tracker measures, what it costs, and who it fits

The best SEO rank tracking software depends on one question: do you need live results-page positions for any keyword and competitor, or your own site's measured positions? AccuRanker, SE Ranking, Semrush, Ahrefs, Wincher, Mangools and Keyword.com check the results page. MrKeyword, which we make, reads your Search Console instead and costs less.

An SEO dashboard showing keyword positions and ranking trends
The short version
  • Rank trackers collect positions in one of two ways: they check the results page for keywords you choose (AccuRanker, SE Ranking, Semrush, Ahrefs, Wincher, Mangools, Keyword.com), or they read the average position Google measured for your own site in Search Console (MrKeyword).
  • Listed starting prices as of October 2026 range from $4 a month (Keyword.com, 50 keywords) to €224 a month (AccuRanker, 2,000 keywords). Semrush's SEO plan is $139 a month for 500 keywords tracked daily; SE Ranking Core is $129 for 2,000.
  • Ahrefs updates tracked keywords weekly by default, per its help center, and Mangools SERPWatcher weekly except on its Agency plan. The others list daily updates.
  • MrKeyword (our product) tracks 25 keywords free and 500 for $10 a month from your own Search Console and Bing data. It never scrapes Google, and it does not track competitors or live results.
  • Pick by the question you need answered: competitors, local packs and exact daily positions need a results-page tracker; trends and reporting on your own site do not.

Disclosure: MrKeyword publishes this page and is one of the eight tools compared. Every competitor price links to the vendor's own pricing page, which we read on 31 October 2026. Where a page did not show us a price, we say so instead of quoting one from a third-party site. Prices change; check the vendor's page before you buy.

What is SEO rank tracking software?

SEO rank tracking software records where your pages appear in search results for a list of keywords, on a schedule, so you can see movement over time instead of guessing from one search. A good rank tracker keeps a history, compares equal periods, shows which page ranks for each keyword and tells you when something moves enough to matter.

Searching your own keywords by hand is not rank tracking. Results depend on location, device, language and the searcher's history, so a manual check from your laptop is one sample from one place. Our guide on how to track keyword rankings covers that in more depth. The real difference between rank tracker SEO software products is not the dashboard, but where the position number comes from.

How do rank trackers collect positions?

Rank trackers get positions in one of two ways: they check the search results page themselves for each keyword and location, or they read the average position Google has already measured for your site in Search Console. Seven of the eight tools on this page take the first route; MrKeyword takes the second.

Results-page checksSearch Console data
What the number meansYour position on one results page, for one location and device, at the moment it was checkedThe average of your topmost position across every real search where you appeared in the period
Keywords coveredAny keyword you add, including ones you do not rank for yetOnly queries where your site received impressions
Sites coveredAny domain, including competitorsOnly sites you have verified
Local and SERP featuresCity or ZIP level, local packs, featured snippets, AI Overviews (varies by tool)Country and device; no SERP feature view
FreshnessDaily or weekly, often with on-demand refreshesDaily, with Google's usual 2 to 3 day delay
Typical cost driverNumber of keywords multiplied by update frequencyNumber of sites and tracked keywords; the underlying data is free

Google's definition matters here. In its Performance report documentation, average position is the topmost position a link to your site held for each query, averaged across queries. So a keyword where you appeared at position 2 for some searches and 6 for others reads as somewhere between the two. A results-page tracker would show one of those numbers, depending on where and when it looked. Neither is wrong; they answer different questions. Our explainer on Search Console average position shows how to read the Google number.

There is also a policy point worth knowing as a buyer. Google's spam policies describe sending automated queries to Google, including scraping results for rank-checking purposes, as machine-generated traffic that violates its spam policies and Terms of Service. Commercial trackers do not publish every detail of how they collect results, and we have not audited any of them, so we make no claim about a particular vendor. It is the reason MrKeyword reads Search Console instead of checking results pages: we never scrape Google.

Which rank tracking software is best?

There is no single best rank tracker: AccuRanker and SE Ranking suit large keyword sets, Semrush and Ahrefs suit teams that want rank tracking inside a full SEO suite, Wincher, Mangools and Keyword.com suit smaller budgets, and MrKeyword suits site owners who want their own measured positions for less. The table sets out what each vendor's own page listed.

Is AccuRanker worth it?

AccuRanker is worth it when you track thousands of keywords and need daily data and an API; for a few hundred keywords its entry plan is larger than you need. On 31 October 2026 its pricing page showed us Professional at €224 a month with 2,000, 3,000 or 5,000 keywords and daily updates, Expert at €764 a month for 10,000 to 25,000 keywords, and Enterprise on request above 25,000. Annual payment takes 10% off. The Professional plan lists a Google Search Console and Google Analytics connection, and read access to its API starts on a higher tier.

Who it fits: agencies and large in-house teams whose reporting runs on daily positions at volume. Who it does not: a single small site, where the cost per keyword you actually care about is high.

Is SE Ranking a good rank tracker?

SE Ranking is a good rank tracker if you also want keyword research, audits and backlinks in one subscription, because its tracker is part of a full SEO suite. Its pricing page listed Core at $129 a month with 2,000 keywords tracked daily and Growth at $279 a month with 5,000, with 20% off when billed yearly and a 14-day free trial without a card. Its rank tracker page describes daily positions in the top 100 on Google, Bing and YouTube, on desktop and mobile, down to city or ZIP code, with competitor comparisons and tracking of more than 35 SERP elements, AI Overviews included.

Who it fits: agencies that want one tool for most SEO work. Who it does not: someone who only needs a handful of keywords tracked; the entry plan starts at 2,000.

How good is Semrush Position Tracking?

Semrush Position Tracking is a capable daily tracker whose main advantage is that it sits next to Semrush's keyword research, competitor and audit tools. Semrush's pricing page listed its SEO plan at $139 a month (or $117.33 a month billed yearly) with 500 keywords to track daily, the only plan on that page to name Position Tracking. Its knowledge base says an account without a paid toolkit can track 10 keywords on 1 website, and that daily results are kept for 60 days before weekly snapshots take over.

Who it fits: teams already paying for Semrush, or who want competitor research and tracking in one login. Who it does not: anyone who wants rank tracking alone; $139 a month buys a whole suite, and you pay for it whether you use it or not. If cost is the reason you are looking, our Semrush alternative page compares the options.

Is Ahrefs Rank Tracker good for daily tracking?

Ahrefs Rank Tracker is built for trend tracking more than daily tracking: Ahrefs' help center says the default update frequency on all plans is weekly. Its pricing page listed Lite at $129 a month with 750 tracked keywords, Standard at $249 with 2,000 and Advanced at $449 with 5,000; the $29 Starter plan did not list tracked keywords. Its Rank Tracker page describes comparisons against up to 10 competitors, location tracking down to ZIP code, mobile and desktop, and 19 types of SERP feature, AI Overviews included.

Who it fits: Ahrefs users who want rankings beside its backlink and keyword data and are happy with weekly points. Who it does not: anyone reporting daily moves, unless they confirm a faster update option with Ahrefs first. Our Ahrefs alternative page covers cheaper routes.

What is Wincher best for?

Wincher is best for small teams and WordPress sites that want a straightforward daily rank tracker with on-demand refreshes. Its home page describes daily rankings, on-demand ranking updates, competitor comparisons, local tracking and connections to WordPress, Wix and Looker Studio, and offers a 7-day free trial of its Pro plan. Its pricing page listed tiers for small teams (from 500 keywords, up to 10 websites), growing teams (from 1,000 keywords) and agencies (from 5,000), with competitor tracking of 5, 10 or 20 per website and a Google Search Console integration.

Price: the pricing page rendered its plans without amounts when we read it on 31 October 2026, so we do not quote one. Third-party sites list figures that disagree with each other, which is exactly why we left them out.

Is Mangools SERPWatcher a good rank tracker?

Mangools SERPWatcher is a good first rank tracker for beginners, with simple reports, but it updates weekly on most plans. Its product page describes rank tracking down to city level on desktop and mobile, email alerts on rank changes, shareable interactive reports and a performance index, with weekly rank updates and daily updates on the Agency plan. SERPWatcher comes bundled with Mangools' keyword and SERP tools, and Mangools offers a 48-hour money-back guarantee.

Price: the SERPWatcher page and the plans page we read showed plan names (Basic, Premium, Agency) but no amounts, so we do not quote a number here.

Why is Keyword.com so cheap?

Keyword.com is cheap to start because it prices by the package you choose: a small keyword count checked weekly costs a few dollars, and the price rises with keywords, frequency and depth. Its pricing page listed Search Visibility from $4 a month, or $3 a month billed yearly ($36 a year), for Google rankings with packages of 50, 100, 200 or 500 keywords, weekly or daily; 360° Visibility, which adds AI search, from $33 a month; and Custom from $490 a month. It offers a 14-day trial with no card. Our Keyword.com pricing and alternatives page goes through each plan.

Who it fits: anyone who wants a dedicated results-page tracker, including local and competitor tracking, without paying for a suite.

Where does MrKeyword fit?

MrKeyword is the Search Console-based option: it reads the average position Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools report for your verified site, keeps a daily copy, and charges less because it does not pay to check results pages. Nothing is scraped and no third-party rank provider is involved. See rank tracking for the full feature list.

  • What you get: average position and change over 7, 28, 90, 180 or 365 days, by device and country; top-3, top-10 and page-two bands; biggest movers; a "wrong page" flag when a different URL ranks than the one you targeted; alerts; and an opt-in weekly email digest on paid plans.
  • What it takes to move up: open a tracked keyword and MrKeyword shows its own measured difficulty for the phrase, a plain next step chosen from your Search Console position, and the strongest pages in its index that target it. That uses no lookup and reads nothing from Google.
  • History beyond Google's window: Search Console keeps 16 months; MrKeyword imports that full window when you connect, then keeps its own daily copy, so your record grows past 16 months.
  • Pricing: Free covers 1 website and 25 tracked keywords. Starter is $10 a month for 1 website and 500 keywords; Growth $19 a month for 3 websites and 1,500; Agency $49 a month for 10 websites, 5,000 keywords and white-label reports. Yearly billing is ten times the monthly price. See pricing.

Is Google Search Console enough for rank tracking?

For your own site, Google Search Console already measures your average position for every query you appear for, free, so for trends and reporting it is often enough on its own. Google describes Search Console as a free service, and the Search Central blog says the Performance report keeps 16 months of data. What it lacks as a tracker is a fixed keyword list, alerts on movement, a view of competitors, and history older than 16 months.

Two limits apply to every tool built on it, MrKeyword included. Google's notes on Search Console data say data normally appears within 2 to 3 days, and that to protect privacy the Performance report does not show every query; very rare queries can be left out. So a Search Console tracker shows a gap for a day with no impressions rather than a made-up position, and it will never show a keyword you have not been seen for. If you only want a free option, our list of free rank trackers compares what is genuinely free.

For an occasional live look at a results page without a paid tracker, Google Ads Help describes the Ad preview and diagnosis tool, which shows how results appear in live search without adding to ad impressions. It needs a Google Ads account, and it is a manual check, not tracking.

How do you choose the right rank tracker?

Choose by the question you need answered, then by how many keywords you really need, then by price. These five steps get most teams to the right tool.

  1. Write down the question

"Is our visibility going up?" and "Which pages are slipping?" are answered by Search Console data. "Where do we rank in Leeds today?" and "Is a competitor overtaking us?" need a results-page tracker.

  2. Count the keywords that drive decisions

Start from the queries Search Console already shows for your site, not a list from memory. Most small sites need a few hundred keywords, not thousands, which changes which plans make sense.

  3. Decide how often you will act on the data

If you review weekly, a weekly tracker such as Ahrefs or Mangools on most plans is enough. If you send daily client reports or alerts, you need daily updates.

  4. Check what else you need in the same login

If you also want keyword research, audits and backlinks, a suite such as Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking may beat a dedicated tracker plus separate tools. If you only need rankings, a dedicated tracker usually costs less.

  5. Run the trial on your own keywords

Most of these tools offer a trial or a free tier. Compare their positions with your Search Console average position for the same keywords, and remember the two measure different things.

Many teams combine both approaches: Search Console data for trends on their own site, and a results-page tracker for the few keywords where a location, a competitor or a SERP feature matters. Agencies weighing tools across clients can also see our page on SEO tools for agencies.

Which rank tracker fits which need?

Match the tool to the job: no tracker is the cheapest and the most complete at the same time.

If you need…Tools that fitWhy
Thousands of keywords, updated daily, with an APIAccuRanker, SE RankingTheir entry plans start at 2,000 keywords tracked daily
Rank tracking inside a full SEO suiteSemrush, SE Ranking, AhrefsResearch, audits and backlinks sit in the same subscription
Local and ZIP-code rankingsSE Ranking, Ahrefs, Keyword.com, WincherOnly a results-page check from that place answers it
Competitor positionsAccuRanker, SE Ranking, Semrush, Ahrefs, Wincher or Keyword.com (Mangools does not state it)Search Console only covers sites you have verified
The lowest cost for a dedicated live trackerKeyword.comPackages start at 50 keywords for a few dollars a month
Your own measured positions, trends and wrong-page alerts for lessMrKeyword, Google Search ConsoleThey read the average position Google measured across every real search

What does MrKeyword not do?

MrKeyword is not a results-page rank tracker, so it cannot replace AccuRanker, SE Ranking or Keyword.com if you rely on live positions.

  • It does not check live search results. Positions are the averages Google and Bing report for a period.
  • It does not track competitors' rankings or share of voice.
  • It does not track SERP features such as featured snippets, local packs or AI Overviews.
  • It cannot show a position for a keyword or day with no impressions; it shows a gap, never a zero.
  • It works only for sites you have verified in Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools, and its newest days carry Google's 2 to 3 day delay.

If those limits rule it out, one of the results-page trackers above is the better fit, and MrKeyword can still sit alongside it for Search Console trends, audits and keyword cannibalization checks.

Questions and answers

Best rank tracking software questions

What is the best SEO rank tracking software?

It depends on what you need. AccuRanker and SE Ranking suit thousands of keywords tracked daily, Semrush and Ahrefs suit teams that want rank tracking inside a full suite, Keyword.com is the cheapest dedicated live tracker, and MrKeyword suits site owners who want their own Search Console positions for less.

How much does rank tracking software cost?

As of October 2026, listed starting prices ran from $4 a month (Keyword.com, 50 keywords) to €224 a month (AccuRanker, 2,000 keywords). Semrush's SEO plan was $139 a month for 500 keywords, SE Ranking Core $129 for 2,000 and Ahrefs Lite $129 for 750. MrKeyword is free for 25 keywords and $10 a month for 500.

Why do rank trackers show different positions from Search Console?

They measure different things. A rank tracker checks one results page from one location and device at one moment. Search Console averages your topmost position across every real search where you appeared in the period, so the two rarely match exactly.

Which rank trackers update daily?

AccuRanker, SE Ranking, Semrush Position Tracking, Wincher and Keyword.com (on its daily packages) list daily updates. Ahrefs Rank Tracker updates weekly by default, and Mangools SERPWatcher updates weekly except on its Agency plan. MrKeyword updates daily as Google publishes Search Console data.

Does MrKeyword scrape Google?

No. MrKeyword reads the positions Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools report for sites you have verified. Google's spam policies describe scraping results for rank-checking purposes as against its policies, and MrKeyword never does it. The trade-off is that it cannot track competitors or live results.

Can I track competitors with MrKeyword?

No. MrKeyword only sees sites you have verified in Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools. For competitor positions you need a results-page tracker such as SE Ranking, Semrush, Ahrefs, AccuRanker, Wincher or Keyword.com.
