- The most complete free rank tracker for your own site is Google Search Console: average position for every query, free, with 16 months of history. Bing Webmaster Tools does the same for Bing.
- Free tiers of commercial trackers are small: Seobility Basic tracks 10 keywords, and a Semrush account without an SEO Toolkit subscription can monitor 10 keywords on 1 website.
- SEO PowerSuite Rank Tracker has a free desktop version that its maker says checks rankings with no limit on keywords or websites.
- MrKeyword Free (our product) tracks 25 keywords on 1 website from your Search Console and Bing positions and keeps a daily history. It does not check live results.
- Wincher, SE Ranking, SerpRobot and Ubersuggest offered trials, not free rank tracking plans, on their pages that day.
Disclosure: MrKeyword publishes this page and is one of the tools listed. Every limit below links to the official page we read on 29 October 2026. Free plans change often, so check the vendor's page before you rely on a number.
What counts as a free rank tracker?
A free rank tracker here means one you can keep using without paying and without a time limit: a free plan, a free version or a free service, not a trial. That rules out a surprising number of tools that advertise “free rank tracking” on the landing page and ask for a card after 7 or 14 days. We list those separately at the end, because a trial is still useful for a one-off check.
Two other things decide whether a free option is useful to you:
- Whose site it can track. Search Console-based tools only see sites you have verified. Tools that check the live results page can track any domain, including competitors.
- How the position is measured. An average across all real searches, or one look at one results page from one place. The next section explains why the two numbers differ.
Search Console data vs live SERP checks
Free rank tracking tools get positions in one of two ways: by reading the average position Google or Bing already measured for your site, or by checking the results page themselves for a keyword. Neither is wrong; they answer different questions.
| Search Console / Bing data | Live SERP check | |
|---|---|---|
| What the number is | Average of your topmost position across every search where you appeared in the period | Your position on one results page, from one location and device, at one moment |
| Sites it covers | Only sites you have verified | Any site, including competitors |
| Keywords it covers | Only queries you already received impressions for | Any keyword you add, even ones you do not rank for |
| Best for | Trends, reporting and finding queries you almost rank for | Exact daily positions, local results and competitor watching |
| Free examples | Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, MrKeyword | Seobility Basic, Semrush free, SEO PowerSuite free version |
Google defines the Search Console figure as the topmost position your link held for each query, averaged across queries: rank 2 for one query and 3 for another gives 2.5. Our guide to Search Console average position covers how to read it.
Free rank trackers compared
Seven options passed the test of a free plan or free service confirmed on the vendor's own page; their limits range from 10 keywords to no stated keyword limit.
What is free, and the limits each page stated
| Tool | What is free | Free limits stated | How positions are measured | Competitors |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | The whole service | Your verified sites; 16 months of performance data | Google's own average position | No |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | The whole service | Your verified sites; 16 months of search performance data | Bing's own performance data | No |
| MrKeyword Free | Free plan, does not expire | 1 website, 25 tracked keywords, 1 seat | Daily copy of Search Console and Bing positions | No |
| Seobility Basic | Free account, unlimited time | 1 website project, 10 keywords tracked | Its own ranking checks | Not stated for Basic |
| Semrush (no SEO Toolkit) | Free account | 10 keywords across 1 website in Position Tracking | Its own ranking checks | Yes |
| SEO PowerSuite Rank Tracker | Free desktop version | No limit on keywords or websites stated; 1 competitor per project | Checks run by the software you install | Yes |
| Ahrefs Free | Free account (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) | Verified sites; up to 1,000 keywords visible at once | Keywords from Ahrefs' own database, not a tracked list | No |
Google Search Console
Google Search Console is the free rank tracker most site owners already have: its Performance report gives an average position for every query and page where your site appeared in Google. Google describes Search Console as a free service, and its Performance report keeps 16 months of data. You need to verify the site first.
Its limits as a tracker: it only covers your own verified sites and queries with impressions, it has no fixed keyword list or alerts on movement, and history older than 16 months is gone unless you store it somewhere. If you are new to it, start with how to track keyword rankings.
Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft's free equivalent for Bing search, and it is the only way to see your measured Bing performance. Bing's site invites you to “get started for free”, and the Bing Webmaster blog says its Search Performance report holds 16 months of history, covering clicks, impressions, CTR, keywords and pages.
MrKeyword Free
MrKeyword's free rank tracker tracks 25 keywords on 1 website by reading the average positions your Search Console reports, and Bing Webmaster Tools if you connect it, then keeping a daily copy. The Free plan does not expire and asks for no card.
- What you get: positions by day, device and country; biggest movers over 7, 28 or 90 days; top-3, top-10 and page-two bands; a warning when a different page ranks than the one you targeted; and the queries you already appear for, ready to add to tracking.
- History beyond Google's window: the daily copy starts the day you connect, so it outlives Search Console's 16 months.
- Limits: 1 website, 25 tracked keywords and 1 seat. Paid plans raise that to 500 keywords from $10 a month, and add the weekly email digest. See pricing.
Track 25 keywords free from your own Search ConsoleNo scraping and no card: the positions Google already measured, kept as a daily history.
Open the free rank trackerSeobility Basic
Seobility's free Basic account tracks 10 keywords for 1 website project, free and with no time limit. Its pricing page lists the Basic plan as “free, unlimited time” with no credit card, and also includes a limited website audit of 100 pages per crawl. On paid plans Seobility says desktop rankings within Google's first two pages update daily and mobile every three days; the page did not state the update schedule for Basic.
Semrush free account
A Semrush account without an SEO Toolkit subscription can monitor 10 keywords across 1 website in Position Tracking, according to Semrush's knowledge base. Its pricing page describes the Free plan as for trying out the platform, with 10 reports a day and no credit card. Position Tracking keeps daily results for 60 days, then weekly snapshots, per the same knowledge base article. Ten keywords is small, but it does let you watch a competitor.
SEO PowerSuite Rank Tracker (free version)
SEO PowerSuite's Rank Tracker is desktop software for Windows, macOS and Linux with a free version that, its maker says, checks rankings without limits on keywords, locations, search engines or checks. The free version allows one competitor per project. It is software you download and install rather than a website, so the checks run from your own computer.
Ahrefs Free
Ahrefs Free is not a rank tracker, but its Site Explorer shows which keywords your verified site ranks for in Google, up to 1,000 at a time. Ahrefs says Ahrefs Free is the renamed Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, with no trial period and no card. Those positions come from Ahrefs' own keyword index, so you see the keywords Ahrefs has recorded rather than a fixed list you chose; Ahrefs' Rank Tracker is not among the tools its free account page lists.
Trackers that offer a trial, not a free plan
These rank trackers are well known, but on 29 October 2026 their own pages offered a trial rather than a free rank tracking plan.
- Wincher: its pricing FAQ says it does not offer a public free plan, and points to its free tools instead.
- SE Ranking: a 14-day free trial with no credit card; paid plans from $129 a month.
- SerpRobot: the first 14 days free with no payment; after that each paid “SERP Bot” is $4.99 a month for 75 keyword updates every 24 hours.
- Ubersuggest: a 7-day free trial; its pages mention a free account for light research but did not confirm free rank tracking.

How to set up free rank tracking in five steps
The strongest free rank tracking setup combines the search engines' own data with a small live-check tool for the few keywords where an exact position matters.
-
Verify your site in Google Search Console
This is the baseline every other tool builds on, and it is free.
-
Verify it in Bing Webmaster Tools too
It takes a few minutes and adds Bing's measured data.
-
Pick the keywords that matter
Start from the queries Search Console already shows, not a list from memory. A keyword with no impressions has no measured position yet.
-
Keep a history
Export Search Console data regularly, or connect a tool such as MrKeyword's free rank tracker that keeps a daily copy for you.
-
Add a live check only where you need one
For a competitor, a city or a keyword you do not rank for yet, use the Semrush or Seobility free allowance, or SEO PowerSuite's free version.
What MrKeyword does not do
MrKeyword's free rank tracker is not a SERP checker, and it cannot track a site you do not control.
- It does not check live search results. Positions are the averages Google and Bing report for the period.
- It does not track competitors' rankings or SERP features such as local packs.
- It cannot show a position for a keyword or day with no impressions; it shows a gap, never a zero.
- It works only for sites verified in Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools.
- The Free plan has no weekly email digest; that starts on paid plans.
Questions and answers
Free rank trackers questions
What is the best free rank tracker?
For your own site, Google Search Console is the most complete free option: it reports your average position for every query, with 16 months of data. For live checks or a competitor, Semrush and Seobility allow 10 keywords free, and SEO PowerSuite's Rank Tracker has a free desktop version.
Is there a free keyword rank tracker without a trial?
Yes. Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, MrKeyword Free (25 keywords, 1 website), Seobility Basic (10 keywords) and Semrush without an SEO Toolkit subscription (10 keywords, 1 website) are all free without a time limit, according to their official pages on 29 October 2026.
Can I track competitors' rankings for free?
Only with a tool that checks live results. Semrush's free allowance and SEO PowerSuite's free version can include a competitor. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and MrKeyword only cover sites you have verified.
Why do free rank trackers show different positions?
They measure different things. Search Console averages your topmost position across every real search in the period. A live SERP check is one results page from one location at one moment, so the two numbers rarely match.
Is Google Search Console a rank tracker?
It reports average position for every query and page, so it works as a free rank tracker for your own site. It has no fixed keyword list, alerts or competitor view, and it keeps 16 months of data.
How many keywords does MrKeyword track for free?
25 tracked keywords on 1 website, on a Free plan that does not expire. Starter raises that to 500 keywords for $10 a month.
