- Start free: Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools give you measured clicks, impressions, indexing and crawl problems for your own site at no cost.
- Pay for the job you do every week. Backlink and competitor research needs a suite with its own web index (Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Moz Pro). Tracking and auditing your own site does not.
- Entry prices checked on 30 October 2026: Semrush SEO $139/month, Ahrefs Starter $29 and Lite $129, SE Ranking Core $129, Moz Pro Starter $49 (one site) and Standard $99. Budget tools start lower.
- MrKeyword (our product) starts at $10/month for 1 website, reads your own Search Console data, runs a 68-check site audit and works from Claude or Cursor via MCP. It has no full web backlink index.
- Most small businesses need one paid tool, not three. Agencies should compare price per client site and white-label reports before anything else.
Disclosure: MrKeyword publishes this guide and is one of the tools in it. We list tools by the job they suit rather than by a score, we do not invent ratings or user counts, and every competitor price links to the official page we read on 30 October 2026. Prices change often, so check the vendor's page before you buy.
What are the best SEO tools in 2026?
There is no single best SEO tool; there is a best tool for each job. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are the free baseline every site should use. Semrush and Ahrefs suit competitor and backlink research, SE Ranking and Moz Pro are all-round suites, and Ubersuggest and MrKeyword are budget options for tracking and auditing your own sites.
This guide is about the everyday work of SEO: tracking rankings, auditing a site for technical problems, finding keywords, checking backlinks and sending reports. If you are mainly shopping for AI writing or AI answer tracking, read our separate comparison of AI SEO tools instead. If price is the main filter, see affordable SEO tools under $50 a month.
How did we compare the tools?
We compared each tool on five everyday jobs, its lowest published price, and where its data comes from, using only the vendors' own pages. We did not run benchmarks and we do not award scores.
- The five jobs: rank tracking, site audits, keyword research, backlink analysis and reporting.
- Data source: your own verified site data (Search Console, Bing), the vendor's own crawler and keyword database, or both. This decides what a tool can know. A tool built on your Search Console can measure your clicks but cannot see a competitor's; a tool that shows a competitor's traffic is estimating it.
- Entry price: the cheapest paid plan on the official pricing page on 30 October 2026, with monthly and yearly billing where both are shown.
- Who it suits: the kind of business that gets the most from it, and one real limitation.
SEO tools compared at a glance
The table below lists each tool's type, entry price and the job it is best for. Read the "best for" column first: it matters more than the order of the rows.

Google Search Console
Google Search Console is the free tool every site owner should set up first, because it is the only place to see Google's own measured clicks and impressions for your site. Google describes it as a free service that helps you monitor, maintain and troubleshoot your presence in Google Search.
Jobs it does: the Performance report (clicks, impressions, average position and the queries behind them), URL Inspection, indexing reports, sitemaps and Core Web Vitals. Best for: everyone, as the source of truth for your own Google data.
Limitation: it covers only sites you have verified, has no keyword research for new topics, shows no competitor data, and reports average position rather than a daily rank. For a guide to reading that number, see Search Console average position.
Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools is the free Microsoft equivalent, and it includes more than many people expect: keyword research, a backlinks report and an on-demand site scan. Microsoft's feature list names Search performance (the last 6 months of clicks and impressions by page and keyword), URL inspection, Site explorer, Sitemaps, IndexNow, URL submission, Backlinks, Keyword research, SEO reports and Site scan.
Best for: a free second opinion on technical problems, and Bing traffic you would otherwise ignore. You can import sites already verified in Search Console. Our Bing Webmaster Tools guide walks through setup.
Limitation: it reports Bing only, and its history in Search performance is shorter than Google's.
Semrush
Semrush is a broad marketing suite whose strength is research on other websites: their keywords, their traffic estimates and the gaps between you and them. On its pricing page the SEO plan costs $139 a month, or $117.33 a month billed yearly, and lists 5 websites to monitor and 500 keywords tracked daily. A free account gives 1 demo project and 10 reports a day.
Best for: marketers and agencies who research competitors every week and want rank tracking, audits and keyword data in one subscription.
Limitation: the entry price is the highest of the suites here, and competitor traffic numbers are estimates, not measurements. Our Semrush alternative page covers the trade-offs in more detail.
Ahrefs
Ahrefs is best known for its backlink index, which makes it a common choice for link building and link audits. Its pricing page lists Starter at $29 a month and Lite at $129 a month. Lite includes 750 tracked keywords updated weekly, 100,000 site audit crawl credits a month, 5 unverified projects plus unlimited verified ones, and 6 months of history. Ahrefs says yearly billing saves up to 17%.
Starter is a much smaller plan. Ahrefs' Starter plan announcement says it includes Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker with 200 credits a month, renews monthly only, and cannot take extra users or credits. Ahrefs Free gives verified site owners a Site Audit (5,000 crawl credits per project a month) and a Site Explorer view of their own site.
Best for: anyone whose main job is backlinks: finding them, auditing them or studying a competitor's. Limitation: the plans where Ahrefs is strongest start at $129 a month with one user included. See our Ahrefs alternative page.
SE Ranking
SE Ranking is an all-in-one suite with generous tracking and audit allowances on its entry plan, which makes it popular with agencies. On its pricing page, Core costs $129 a month, or $103.20 a month billed yearly, and includes 10 projects, 2,000 keywords tracked daily, 250,000 audit pages a month, 1 manager seat, API credits with MCP access, and 6 months of history.
Best for: agencies and in-house teams that track many keywords across several sites. Limitation: extra seats cost more, and full project-lifetime history is on the Growth plan.
Moz Pro
Moz Pro is a long-standing suite known for its Domain Authority metric, with rank tracking, site crawls and link research. Its pricing page lists Standard at $99 a month, or $79 a month billed yearly, and below the table offers a $49-a-month Starter plan for individuals managing one website. Standard comes with 1 user, 3 tracked sites, 300 tracked keywords and 400,000 pages crawled a month.
Best for: small businesses that want a familiar suite with a link index. Limitation: Domain Authority is Moz's own score, not a Google metric. Our guides on what domain authority is and Moz alternatives go further.
Ubersuggest
Ubersuggest is a lower-cost suite aimed at people doing SEO on their own website, with a one-time lifetime option as well as monthly and yearly plans. Its pricing page shows prices in the visitor's local currency; viewed from Canada on 30 October 2026, the Individual plan was CA$39 a month, CA$16 a month billed yearly, or CA$390 once for lifetime access. Individual includes 1 project, 125 tracked keywords updated weekly, a 1,000-page site audit weekly and 150 reports a day.
Best for: solo site owners who want keyword ideas and a basic audit without a suite price. Limitation: rank updates are weekly, and the allowances are small for an agency.
MrKeyword
MrKeyword is our product: a low-cost SEO workspace for tracking and auditing sites you own, built on your Search Console and Bing data and its own crawler. Plans from our pricing page: Free ($0, 1 website, 25 tracked keywords), Starter $10 a month (1 website, 500 keywords), Growth $19 a month (3 websites, 1,500 keywords) and Agency $49 a month (10 websites, 5,000 keywords, white-label reports). Yearly billing costs ten months' price.
What it does well:
- Own data. Rank tracking stores a daily copy of the average positions Search Console and Bing report for your keywords, so the numbers are measured, not sampled.
- A 68-check site audit. The Site Audit checks 68 issue types in 7 categories, from indexing and content to internal links, performance, markup, accessibility and AI discoverability, with a printed health-score formula.
- MCP for Claude and Cursor. An MCP server with 25 tools lets an AI assistant read your rankings, audits and Search Console queries and answer questions about them.
- AI visibility. Paid plans check whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity name you for questions you choose (AI visibility).
- A Data API. Builders can buy MrKeyword's own link authority, traffic estimates and link data through a metered Data API, priced separately, with 500 free credits a month.
Best for: small businesses and agencies that mostly track and fix their own or their clients' sites, and people who work from Claude or Cursor. Limitation: see the next section.

What should a small business choose, and what should an agency choose?
A small business usually needs Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and one low-cost tool; an agency needs per-client economics, seats and white-label reports. The two cases look different in practice.
-
Small business with one site
Set up Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Run a site audit and fix what blocks indexing first. Add a paid tool only when a free one cannot answer a question you ask every week. If that question is "how are my keywords moving", a $10 tracker is enough; if it is "who links to my competitor", you need a suite.
-
Freelancer or small agency, 3 to 10 clients
Work out the cost per client site. Suites price by projects and keywords; MrKeyword Agency covers 10 websites for $49 a month with white-label reports. Many agencies keep one research suite for pitches and backlinks, and a cheaper per-site tool for monthly tracking and reports.
-
Larger agency or in-house team
Seats, history and API access matter more than the headline price. Check how much each extra user costs, how long rank history is kept, and whether the API or MCP access is included or extra.
What MrKeyword does not do
MrKeyword does not have a full web backlink index, does not measure competitors' rankings or traffic, and does not check live search results. Specifically:
- Backlinks are only the links MrKeyword has discovered by crawling, not a complete index of the web. For serious link building, Ahrefs, Semrush or Moz Pro is the better fit.
- Competitors have no measured rank. Competitor positions, keywords and traffic are marked Predicted or Not available. Only your verified sites get measured positions.
- Positions are Search Console and Bing averages over a reporting period, with Google's reporting delay, and only for queries with impressions. It is not a live rank checker.
- Search volume is not invented. Without a connected measurement, the app says Not available rather than guessing.
- Rankings are country-level; it makes no city-level rank claims.
If those gaps matter for your work, pair MrKeyword with a suite, or choose a suite on its own.
Questions and answers
Best SEO tools questions
What are the best SEO tools in 2026?
It depends on the job. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are the free baseline. Semrush and Ahrefs suit competitor and backlink research, SE Ranking and Moz Pro are all-round suites, and Ubersuggest and MrKeyword are budget options for tracking and auditing your own sites.
What is the best free SEO tool?
Google Search Console, because it is the only place to see Google's measured clicks, impressions and indexing for your site, and Google describes it as a free service. Bing Webmaster Tools adds free keyword research, a backlinks report and a site scan.
Which SEO tool is best for backlinks?
A suite with its own web-scale link index, such as Ahrefs, Semrush or Moz Pro. MrKeyword only shows links it has discovered by crawling, so it is not the right tool for link building.
How much do SEO tools cost?
On 30 October 2026, entry prices on official pages were: Semrush SEO $139/month, Ahrefs Starter $29 and Lite $129, SE Ranking Core $129, Moz Pro Starter $49 (one site) or Standard $99, and MrKeyword Starter $10. Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are free.
What SEO tools do agencies use?
Many agencies combine a research suite such as Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking with a per-site tool for tracking and white-label client reports. Compare price per client site, seats and branding options.
Is this list biased toward MrKeyword?
MrKeyword publishes it, so read it with that in mind. We list tools by job rather than ranking them, state MrKeyword's limits, and link every competitor price to the official page we checked on 30 October 2026.
