The best AI SEO tools in 2026, compared by what the AI actually does

“AI SEO tool” now covers everything from a content editor with a writing assistant to a suite that tracks your brand in ChatGPT. This guide compares nine of them on four things you can check: where the data comes from, what the AI does, what it costs to start, and who it suits. We make one of them, so we say where it falls short too.

An SEO dashboard showing search performance charts
The short version
  • There is no single best AI SEO tool. The right one depends on the job: competitive research and backlinks, writing and optimising content, tracking AI answers, or understanding your own site's search data.
  • Start with the free baseline: Google Search Console already counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in its Web totals, and is testing an AI-powered way to configure reports.
  • All-in-one suites (Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Moz Pro) bring their own web-scale data and now add AI visibility tracking; paid plans start between $29 and $139 a month, with AI search features often on higher tiers or as add-ons.
  • Content tools (Surfer, Clearscope, Frase) use AI to brief, draft and optimise pages, and have added AI answer tracking.
  • MrKeyword (our product) suits site owners who want answers from their own Search Console data, or who work from Claude or Cursor via MCP. It has no full web backlink index and no competitor traffic estimates.

Disclosure: this guide is published by MrKeyword, one of the tools below. To keep it useful, we list tools by category rather than by a score, we do not invent ratings or user counts, and every competitor price links to the official page we read it from.

How we chose and compared the tools

We picked tools that people commonly shortlist when they search for AI SEO software, covering four categories: the free Google baseline, all-in-one SEO suites, AI content tools, and tools built on your own first-party data. Each is described with the same four criteria:

  • Data source. Where the numbers come from: your own Search Console account, the vendor's own crawler and keyword database, or analysis of pages that currently rank. This decides what a tool can and cannot know. A tool that only reads your Search Console cannot see a competitor's traffic; a tool that models competitor traffic is estimating, not measuring.
  • What the AI actually does. Writing drafts, grading content, tracking whether ChatGPT or Perplexity names your brand, answering questions about your data, or exposing the tool to an AI assistant through an MCP server. These are very different jobs.
  • Price transparency. The lowest published paid price on the official pricing page, on 27 October 2026. Where a vendor publishes only yearly billing, we say so.
  • Who it suits. The kind of person or team that gets the most out of it, and a real limitation.

We did not run benchmark tests, and we do not score the tools. Feature lists change quickly in this category, so check the vendor's page before you buy.

Google Search Console: the free baseline

What it is. Google's own report on how your verified site performs in Google Search: queries, clicks, impressions, average position, indexing and page experience.

AI features. Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted in the Performance report under the Web search type, so it is already in your totals, though not broken out separately. In December 2025 Google announced an experimental AI-powered configuration that turns a plain-English request into report filters and comparisons, rolling out gradually to a limited set of sites.

Data source: first-party Google data for sites you have verified. Price: free. Best for: everyone; every other tool here is more useful with it connected.

Limitation: it shows only your own sites, keeps about 16 months of history, has no keyword research or competitor data, and does not tell you what ChatGPT or Perplexity say about you.

Semrush

What it is. A broad marketing suite covering keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking, site audits, backlinks and advertising research.

AI features. Its pricing page lists AI visibility tracking and sentiment monitoring, AI visibility reports for any domain, custom prompt monitoring, an AI-ready site audit and MCP access. Its "SEO + AI Search" Starter plan lists 50 prompts tracked daily.

Data source: Semrush's own databases of keywords, rankings and domains, plus modelled competitor data. Starting price: a free plan, then the SEO plan at $139/month on monthly billing ($117.33/month billed annually); SEO + AI Search plans from $199/month. Best for: marketing teams that need competitive research, PPC data and many tools in one subscription.

Limitation: it is a large product with a price to match, and competitor traffic figures are estimates, not measurements. For a more detailed take, see our Semrush alternative page.

Ahrefs

What it is. An SEO suite best known for its backlink index, with keyword research, site explorer, rank tracking and site audit.

AI features. Brand Radar is included on Lite, Standard and Advanced, with tracked AI prompts (150, 300 and 600 checks a month). Brand Radar AI is an add-on from $199/month, with extra prompt packages from $50/month. Lite and above list API and MCP access. An AI Content Helper is part of a Content Kit add-on listed as "soon", from $99/month.

Data source: Ahrefs' own web crawler and backlink index, plus its keyword database. Starting price: a free tier; Starter $29/month; Lite $129/month. Best for: link building, link audits and competitor analysis.

Limitation: the AI visibility features sit on the higher tiers and add-ons, so the cost of a full AI setup is well above the entry price. See our Ahrefs alternative page for the trade-offs.

SE Ranking

What it is. An all-in-one suite with rank tracking, keyword research, competitor analysis, backlinks, audits and reporting, popular with agencies.

AI features. An AI Search toolkit tracks brand presence and competitors in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. It also lists an AI Writer, an AI visibility API and MCP access.

Data source: SE Ranking's own rank checks, keyword and backlink databases. Starting price: Core at $129/month on monthly billing; the AI Search add-on is $89/month ($71.20 billed annually). Best for: agencies and consultants who want a full suite with AI search tracking as an option.

Limitation: AI search tracking is an add-on, so budget for it separately.

Moz Pro

What it is. A long-standing SEO suite with keyword research, rank tracking, site crawls and link analysis, known for the Domain Authority metric.

AI features. Moz's pricing page lists AI Visibility dashboards and tracked prompts (for example 3 dashboards and 150 prompts on Standard), AI content briefs on higher plans, and Moz AI Explorer.

Data source: Moz's own link index and keyword data. Starting price: Moz says its entry-level plan is $49/month, designed for one website; check the pricing page for what each tier includes. Best for: individuals and small teams who want Moz's link and authority metrics.

Limitation: Domain Authority is Moz's own estimate, not a Google metric, and the larger AI allowances are on higher tiers.

Surfer

What it is. A content optimisation tool that gives writers real-time guidelines for a target keyword, with integrations for WordPress, Google Docs and Contentful.

AI features. An AI writing assistant (Surfy) and humanizer, one-click content optimisation, and AI prompt tracking on some plans: its AI Search Analytics, Pro and Peace of Mind plans track visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini. Several plans list MCP.

Data source: competition-based analysis of what ranks for your keyword. Starting price: Discovery from $49/month, billed yearly; the pricing page shows yearly billing only. Best for: writers and content teams optimising individual articles.

Limitation: it is a content tool, not a full SEO suite, and it lists no Search Console integration on its pricing page, so you still need another source for your own rankings.

Clearscope

What it is. A content optimisation platform for teams, centred on term suggestions that guide writing for a target query.

AI features. AI drafts (20 a month on Essentials and Business), and Query Tracking that shows where your brand is mentioned in ChatGPT and Gemini answers, and where competitors are recommended instead; its homepage also names Claude.

Data source: analysis of the search results for each target query. Starting price: Essentials at $129/month. Best for: content teams with an established editorial process who want a focused writing tool.

Limitation: no rank tracking for your whole site, technical audit or backlink data; it does one job.

Frase

What it is. A content platform that describes itself as running SEO and AI search end to end: audit, research, writing, publishing and hosting.

AI features. Research that ends in a brief, an AI agent that drafts with your brand in context (25 AI generations a month on Starter), and AI visibility tracking: ChatGPT and Google AI on Starter, adding Perplexity on Professional, and Claude and Gemini on Scale. It offers an MCP server, CLI and API on every plan.

Data source: the pages already ranking for a topic, plus your search data. Starting price: Starter at $49/month, month to month. Best for: small content teams who want research, brief and draft in one place.

Limitation: engine coverage for AI visibility grows with the plan, so check which engines your tier includes.

MrKeyword

What it is. Our product: an SEO workspace for rank tracking, keyword research, a 60-check site audit and reports, built on data you own or can verify.

AI features. Rules find audit issues with plain code; AI then explains why an issue matters on that page and drafts the fix, such as a title, meta description or structured data, for you to approve. It writes content briefs, tracks whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity name your brand for questions you choose (AI visibility), and runs an MCP server with 25 tools, so Claude, Cursor or another MCP client can answer questions from your workspace. AI never produces the metrics.

Data source: your Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools properties, Google Keyword Planner volumes and MrKeyword's own crawler. Starting price: a Free plan ($0, 1 website, 3 AI visibility questions); Starter $10/month for 1 website, Growth $19/month for 3, Agency $49/month for 10. Best for: site owners who want answers from their own Search Console data, and people who work from Claude or Cursor via MCP. See SEO with Claude.

Limitation: MrKeyword has no full web backlink index and no competitor traffic estimates, and it only reports rankings for sites you have verified. If link building or competitive intelligence is your job, a suite above is the better fit.

How to choose an AI SEO tool for your situation

Your situationTools that fitWhy
You have one site and little budgetGoogle Search Console, then a low-cost tool such as MrKeyword or Moz's entry planYour own data answers most weekly questions; pay only when you need more.
Link building or competitor research is the jobAhrefs, Semrush, SE RankingOnly tools with their own web-scale index can show other sites' links and keywords.
You publish a lot of contentSurfer, Clearscope, FraseTheir AI is built around briefing, drafting and optimising pages.
You want to know if ChatGPT or Perplexity names youMost tools here now offer it; compare engines covered and prompts per planCoverage and allowances vary more than the feature names suggest.
You work from Claude, Cursor or another AI assistantTools with an MCP server, such as MrKeyword, Frase, Semrush, Ahrefs (Lite and above)The assistant can query real data instead of guessing.
You run an agencyA suite for research, plus a per-site tool for reportingCheck per-client pricing, seats and white-label reports before committing.

Two checks apply to any tool. First, ask where each number comes from: measured (Search Console), sampled (rank checks) or modelled (traffic estimates). Second, look at what the AI touches. AI that writes a draft you edit is low risk; AI that invents a metric, or changes your site without review, deserves more scrutiny.

Questions and answers

Best AI SEO tools questions

What is the best AI SEO tool in 2026?

There is no single best one. For competitive research and backlinks, suites such as Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking fit; for writing and optimising content, Surfer, Clearscope and Frase; for answers from your own Search Console data or via Claude and Cursor, MrKeyword. Google Search Console is the free baseline for all of them.

Are there free AI SEO tools?

Google Search Console is free and includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in its Web totals. Semrush, Ahrefs and MrKeyword also offer free plans with limited features; check each pricing page for what is included.

Which AI SEO tools track ChatGPT and Perplexity answers?

On 27 October 2026, Semrush, Ahrefs (Brand Radar), SE Ranking (AI Search add-on), Moz Pro, Surfer, Clearscope, Frase and MrKeyword all listed some form of AI answer tracking. The engines covered and the number of prompts differ by plan.

Do I still need Google Search Console if I buy an AI SEO tool?

Yes. It is the only source of Google's own clicks and impressions for your site. Many tools connect to it, and tools that do not are working from their own estimates of your rankings.

What is an MCP server in an SEO tool?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets an AI assistant such as Claude or Cursor call a tool's functions directly. With an SEO tool's MCP server connected, you can ask questions in plain English and the assistant reads the tool's real data to answer.

Is this comparison biased toward MrKeyword?

We make MrKeyword, so treat it with that in mind. We listed tools by category rather than ranking them, stated MrKeyword's limitations, and linked every competitor price to the official page we checked.
