Internal linking tool: link suggestions that use words already on your pages

MrKeyword finds pages that rank just off the top in Search Console, or that almost nothing links to, then looks through your other pages for sentences that already contain one of their search queries. Each suggestion names the page to edit, the exact words to link and the sentence they are in, and skips pages that already link.

The short version
  • Each suggestion reads: on this page, link these words to that page, with the sentence the words are in.
  • The link words are always one of the target page's own Search Console queries, and they must already appear, word for word, in the source page's text.
  • Targets are pages with search demand at positions 4–20, or pages that two or fewer other pages link to.
  • Pages that already link to the target are skipped, using the outgoing links the Site Audit crawler saved.
  • Suggestions are worked out fresh from your latest Site Audit crawl, and are also available through the MCP tool get_internal_link_suggestions.

What an internal link suggestion is

An internal link suggestion is a specific edit: on one of your pages, turn a phrase that is already there into a link to another of your pages. Internal links help people and Google find a page, and the linked words tell Google what the target page is about. Google's own guidance asks for descriptive anchor text, and most sites have far fewer useful internal links than they could.

The hard part is not knowing that internal links matter. It is finding the right sentence on the right page, without stuffing in new text. That is the part MrKeyword automates.

How MrKeyword finds internal link opportunities

It combines two things you already have: the pages a Site Audit crawled, and the queries Search Console shows for each page. No text is generated and nothing is guessed.

  1. Pick the pages that need links

A page becomes a target when its Search Console queries at average positions 4 to 20 add up to at least 30 impressions — demand it could win with a push — or when two or fewer other pages link to it. Up to 60 targets are kept, those with the most near-top impressions first.

  2. Use its own search queries as link words

For each target, MrKeyword takes up to four of its Search Console queries with the most impressions, using queries of two to six words. These are the phrases people already type to find that page.

  3. Find them, word for word, on your other pages

It searches the visible text of every other indexable page in the crawl for those exact phrases, as whole words and ignoring case. “best running shoes” matches “Picking the Best Running Shoes for flat feet”, but not “these running shoes are best” or a phrase buried inside a longer word.

  4. Skip pages that already link

The crawler saves each page's internal outgoing links (up to 500 per page), so a page that already links to the target is never suggested.

  5. Prefer pages that earn clicks

Up to three source pages are suggested per target, starting with the ones that get the most Search Console clicks, then the ones with the most internal links of their own.

What each suggestion contains

FieldWhat it tells you
Source pageThe page to edit, with its Search Console clicks
Anchor wordsThe exact words to link, in the page's own capitalisation
SentenceThe sentence the words are in, with the words highlighted
Target pageThe page to link to, how many pages link to it now, and the query's average position
ReasonEither the position the target ranks at for that query, or how few pages link to it
From MrKeyword's suggestion rules. Positions are Search Console averages.

Pages that almost nothing links to

A page with two or fewer internal links is a target even if it does not rank near the top yet, because Google and visitors rarely reach it. Its suggestions say so plainly — “Only 1 page links to the target” — instead of quoting a position. The link words are still its own Search Console queries, so a weakly linked page needs at least some search impressions before it can get suggestions.

How it avoids suggesting links you already have

For crawls that saved each page's outgoing links, the check is exact: a source page that already links to the target is left out.

Older crawls kept only the first 10 pages linking to each target. For those, a target with more than 10 linking pages cannot be fully checked, so its suggestions carry a Check it isn't already linked label. Running a new Site Audit removes the label.

Why only words already on the page? A suggestion that needs new text is a writing task, and invented anchor text tends to read like it. When the phrase is already in a real sentence, adding the link is a one-minute edit that keeps the page as it was written.

What you do with a suggestion

The Internal Links page groups suggestions by target page. For each one you can copy the instruction — “On this page, link the words … to that page”, with the sentence and the reason — into your CMS notes or an AI assistant, or add it to the work plan as a task. You make the edit in your own CMS.

Internal links are also one of the suggested fixes for keywords on page 2 in the SEO opportunities inbox, so the two pages work together: the inbox says which page needs a push, and this page says where to link from.

Internal link suggestions in Claude and other AI assistants

MrKeyword's MCP server offers the tool get_internal_link_suggestions. Give it a site and an optional limit (20 by default, up to 100) and it returns each suggestion's source page, target page, anchor words, sentence, query, reason, and whether the “already linked” check was complete. An assistant with access to your CMS or code can then make the edits. See the developer page to connect.

What MrKeyword does not do

  • It does not add links to your site. It tells you where and with which words; you or your assistant make the change.
  • It does not write or rewrite text to create a place for a link. A page that never mentions the phrase gets no suggestion.
  • It does not suggest links without Search Console. The link words come from your queries, so a site without Search Console data gets none.
  • It does not use single-word queries as anchors, or pages the crawl found to be non-indexable as sources or targets.
  • It does not store suggestions. They are worked out from the latest completed crawl each time, so they change when you crawl again.

What each plan includes

Internal link suggestions have no separate allowance. They read the pages your Site Audit crawled, and the number of pages you can crawl each month depends on the plan.

Questions and answers

Internal linking questions

What is an internal linking tool?

A tool that finds places on your own website where one page should link to another. MrKeyword's version names the page to edit, the exact words to link and the sentence they are in, using words that are already on the page.

Where do the anchor text suggestions come from?

From the target page's own Search Console queries — the phrases people search for when Google shows that page. A suggestion only appears when a source page already contains one of those phrases word for word.

Will it suggest a link that already exists?

Not on crawls that saved each page's outgoing links: those are checked exactly. On older crawls, targets with more than 10 linking pages are labelled so you can check before adding the link.

Which pages get internal link suggestions?

Pages with at least 30 Search Console impressions on queries at average positions 4 to 20, and pages that two or fewer other pages link to. Up to 60 target pages and three source pages for each are suggested.

Do I need to run a Site Audit first?

Yes. Suggestions are read from your latest completed Site Audit crawl together with your Search Console data. Until a crawl finishes, the Internal Links page asks you to start one.
